This session uses a research-based learning progression to teach force and motion using cheap and familiar materials. Learn to “teach the laws for less” and leave with effective and captivating activities, interactive demos, design projects and assessment activities that develop deeper understanding using Claims, Evidence, Reasoning and Rebuttal for sense making. These activities, aligned with the NGSS scientific and engineering practices, are drawn from Kent State University’s Operation Physics, a program for in-servicing teachers Grades (4-9).
This session uses fun, cheap, and easy-to-manage activities for students grade 4-9 drawn from Kent State’s Operation Physics. Learn to “teach energy concepts for less” with captivating activities, interactive demos, engineering design projects and assessment activities. Help your students develop deeper understanding using Claims, Evidence, Reasoning and Rebuttal for sense making. This session uses a research-based learning progression and aligns with NGSS scientific and engineering practices.
Participants will explore hands-on inquiry and engineering design activities which model the learning progression from the simplest introduction of content to discovery of patterns, connections and general principles using data, reasoning from evidence, math techniques and communication.
Use engineering design to investigate Ohio’s energy resources. Participants will create a pipeline, an oil derrick and a model oil well. The session includes sample lessons from the 2-day Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program workshop. Sponsored by OOGEEP.
I am a retired Environmental and Biology teacher. I currently represent the Ohio Soybean Council and GrowNextGen.org. We received a grant from Battelle to support education and outreach about Ohio's #1 industry.
Small groups will build simple bridges – using different simple composites and with different orientations - then test the force required to break them. Results comparison will show why composites are necessary and will use math to predict best design choices.
